How to Make Money with Your Blog

If you are putting hours into writing content for your blog, you may want to make a few bucks (or more) to help pay for hosting charges and other costs associated with running it. Some bloggers find that they can make more than just small change, but most not enough to quit their day job. In any case, here are a few of the more popular methods.

Several ways by which you can make money with your weblog include Google Adsense, Amazon Associates, various other affiliate programs, advertising, and donations. Keep in mind that the success of these programs is highly dependent upon your content and the level of traffic you get to your site.

Google Adsense

Since its launch in the spring of 2003, ads by Google have proliferated throughout the world of blogs and other sites, making it easy for thousands of website owners to make money from the content on their sites. Usually it’s not a lot of money, but the ads are easy to implement, relevant to the content on your pages, and unobtrusive compared to the blinking banners and seemingly self-propagating popup ads on many sites.

To be able to put Google Ads on your site, you first need to be accepted into the Google Adword program. Go to https://www.google.com/adsense/ to apply. Google will monitor your site to see if you have the traffic and the content that would pull in sufficient clicks to make your participation in the program worthwhile to Google and to you. Sites with focused content make the best candidates. If accepted into the program, all you need to do is place a bit of javascript on one or more of your site templates to create the ads.

How much money can you expect to make from Google Adsense? Google doesn’t allow its participants to publicly share their clicks and earnings data but you can make a rough estimate. The average click-through rate for online advertising in general is around 0.5 to 1.0%. With that rate, if you get 1000 page views per day (pages with Google ads on them), you should expect anywhere from 5 to 10 clicks per day. What will each of those clicks pay? Well, that depends on your content and the keywords on your page that are triggering the ads being served. You can see what ads might be served on your site by entering your URL at the tool on this page or by installing the Adsense Preview Tool. When a visitor clicks on a Google Adsense ad, the hosting website gets a small fee, ranging anywhere from 3 cents to $12 per click or more. You can sign up to be an advertiser on the Google Adword program for $5 and see how much advertisers are paying Google for various search word click-throughs.

Unless your weblog is about some obscure subject, about which advertisers are willing to outbid each other, thereby driving up the amount paid per click, you can count on an average range of 5 cents to 50 cents paid per click. A thousand page views per day, at 1.0% click-through rate and 10 cents per click will yield you a whopping $1.00 per day. Not much, but it should certainly cover your hosting fees, or if you use a hosted blogging service like Typepad, your service fees. Note that weblogs devoted to product reviews like http://pvr.blogs.com/ will generate a higher fee-per-click than political commentary blogs as sellers of the high ticket items will compete to drive up the fees paid to get placed on the ad.

Bing Users Twice As Likely To Click On An Ad Than Google Users?

bing-users-click-ad-clicks

Are people who search on Bing more commercial than Google searchers? According to a study by search-advertising network Chitika, visitors who arrive at sites from organic search results on Bing are 55 percent more likely to click on an ad than if they arrived from Google.

Chitika looked at the clickthrough rates from 32 million ad impressions across its network of more than 50,000 sites in a week in July. Visitors from Bing clicked on an ad 1.5 percent of the time on average, versus a 0.97 percent clickthrough rate for Google visitors and a 1.24 percent clickthrough rate for Yahoo.

One reading of this data is might be that Bing users are more susceptible to ads, and in fact may have used Bing in the first place because of the Bing ads Microsoft is plastering all over the place. (Kinda makes you wonder what will happen when that ad budget goes away).

But a more likely explanation is that Google represents the vast bulk of the traffic, 83 percent to be exact. Bing only represents 8 percent. There is a law of large numbers at work here. The more traffic that comes from any one source (i.e., Google), the lower the clickthrough rate is likely to trend. If the market share was reversed, Bing would undoubtedly have a lower clickthrough rate.

But that still leaves the question of just who are those people on Bing?

- What you make when a friend you referred gets a 1 promo a day for a month: 1 promo x 30 days x Rs.0.10 per promo x 20 friends = Rs 60
- What you make when a friend of a friend you referred gets 1 promo a day for a month : 1 promo x 30 days x Rs.0.05 per promo * 400 friends (assuming each of your twenty friends successfully referred 20 friends each)= Rs.600

So, Rs 6 + Rs 60+ Rs 600 adds up to a cool Rs 666!

Microsoft to let users pick web browser

web-broswers-logo
Microsoft Corp. will offer computer users a choice of rival Web browsers to ward off new European Union antitrust fines, EU regulators and Microsoft said Friday.
Microsoft said its proposal — if accepted by the European Commission — would ‘fully address’ antitrust worries over its browser and ‘would mark a big step forward in addressing a decade of legal issues.’
The EU executive has charged the company with monopoly abuse for tying the Internet Explorer browser to the Windows operating system installed on most of the world’s desktop computers.
It said it welcomed Microsoft’s suggestions but would have to check how they would work and whether they would ensure ‘genuine consumer choice.’ It will seek comment from other browser makers and computer manufacturers before deciding on the proposal, which could become legally binding for five years.
Regulators will also examine a new offer by Microsoft to share information with software developers who want to make products compatible with Windows and Windows servers. That aims to settle a lengthy antitrust row that has racked up nearly euro1.7 million ($2.42 million) in EU fines for Microsoft.
On the browser case, Microsoft is suggesting that users of Windows XP, Vista or its latest release Windows seven could pick a browser from a ballot screen listing five of the most popular browsers in Europe. Existing Windows users would get the ballot screen from a software update.
It said the choice of these five browsers would be reviewed twice a year based on usage data for the previous six months. Microsoft’s browser is the most widely used worldwide, but Mozilla Corp.’s Firefox is gaining in popularity.
Mozilla and Google Inc. — which recently released a browser, Chrome — are supporting the case against Microsoft.
Windows would still include Internet Explorer, but users would be able to disable it. Computer manufacturers could also choose to install other browsers, set them as default and disable Internet Explorer.
Microsoft’s general counsel Brad Smith said this would allow the company to ship Windows seven to European customers with Internet Explorer. The company said in June that it would remove the browser to avoid antitrust problems.
Smith said the pressure was now on EU regulators to approve a new option before Windows seven goes on sale on Oct. 22 or Microsoft would supply its ‘E’ version without any browser.
‘PC manufacturers building machines for the European market will continue to be required to ship E versions of Windows seven until such time that the Commission fully reviews our proposals and determines whether they satisfy our obligations under European law,’ he said.
EU regulators slammed that version as giving no real choice to the five per cent of customers who buy Windows in a stand-alone pack. Most people buy the software pre-installed on a computer assembled by manufacturers such as Dell or HP.
The ballot screen that Microsoft is now proposing is close to what regulators called for in January when they asked Microsoft to offer several browsers on Windows.
It is also backed by Norwegian mobile Internet browser maker Opera Software ASA, which triggered the EU antitrust case by complaining that Microsoft was unfairly using its power as the dominant supplier of operating system software to squeeze out rivals.
Opera lawyer Thomas Vinje welcomed Microsoft’s announcement Friday but said ‘the devil is in the detail’ on how far it would go to calm antitrust fears.
Offering the ballot screen to existing Windows users ‘will change the world,’ he said, because it would encourage developers to make cross-platform software based on Web standards instead of tailoring their work to Microsoft software.
Microsoft says that it fully complies with existing Web standards.
Microsoft said it was also promising to share more interoperability information with developers to help them make software that works with Windows, Windows Server, Office, Exchange and SharePoint.
Smith said this involve ‘significant change by Microsoft’ and was based on long talks with EU regulators. He said they also include enforceable warranty commitments.
‘We believe that if ultimately accepted, this proposal will fully address the European competition law issues relating to the inclusion of Internet Explorer in Windows and interoperability with our high-volume products,’ he said.
